In this case you need to check a few things.
Air handler blower motor constantly running.
A typical ac fan motor uses about 500 watts when it s running.
The average unit has a 500 watt fan which uses almost as much energy over the course of the year as a refrigerator resulting in a 50 month bill.
When your system s air filter is full of dirt and debris the flow of air is restricted which can impede the functioning of your air conditioner.
However if the air is cold then you ll want to check to see if your thermostat is set to the on setting.
The fan limit switch may include a switch that manually keeps the fan running.
To do this feel the air coming out of the vent with your hand.
You can run the fan continuously for some air movement that may be more comfortable.
Check to see whether it s your blower motor or the whole furnace system that s running non stop.
Even if your air filter is new you may be using one that s too restrictive for your system such as one designed to remove pollen and allergens.
The fan limit switch is responsible for turning the blower on and off at the appropriate times.
Locate your fan limit switch.
The next most common problem that can occur with an air handler is a failure of a blower motor whether it be the blower motor or something else that causes the blower motor to fail it could be a bad relay control board run capacitor or the blower motor itself it could also be the blower wheel.
Therefore the fan uses about 360 kwh per month in the on mode.
Cons to keeping fan continuously running.
Other snafus such as a shorted thermostat wire can also cause the a c or warm air furnace fan to run continuously.
We discuss this switch right here.
Note that air handler unit fan ratings vary and some are designed to be fully capable of running continuously for weeks or months while others are not designed for that duty cycle and may wear out or fail.
Without enough air flowing over the coils the system can t remove humidity and cool the air to the set temperature so it keeps running when it shouldn t.
Those problems are explained.
At the furnace or air conditioner air handler or blower unit.
If the air is warm then the blower motor is not the issue.
It could cost you hundreds of dollars a year.
If there is something wrong with the condenser providing heat then the auxiliary heating will be the primary source of heating for your system.
Check to make sure the heat pump condenser outside is running.
If it is not then check the breakers and fuses in the system.
So when the switch is working correctly your furnace fan should turn on several minutes after thermostat calls for heat and turn off several minutes after the heat cycle ends.
